A brand new Mercedes Benz S Class car overturned and caught fire after ramming a roadside concrete barricade at Manoor, near Edappal, on Saturday. The car driver, Mohammed Rishi, escaped with injuries. He was admitted to a private hospital.
Rishi had apparently slept at the wheel. He was taking the car from the Benz showroom in Kozhikode to Kochi. It had been brought to Kozhikode for a demonstration. Eye witnesses said the car hit the barricade and overturned. The driver was saved by breaking open the car’s windshield. The car caught fire in 15 minutes after it overturned. Local people said the fire brigade arrived late. They later blockaded the fire brigade, which led to tension for a while. Traffic along NH-17 came to a standstill following the accident.
